Monopoly in Tourism Killing Praslin!

The situation of Tourism on Praslin is getting out of hand, as monopolistic strong hold of the Two major DMC suffocate the island business community to death. These two Destination Management Companies, have now grip locked the economy of Praslin, holding it at their mercy. Only intervention by the Government of Seychelles can undo this generational disaster at this time.

126 Charters Going Bankrupt

Over 126 excursion - charter operators run out of Praslin island. These operators base out of Côte D'Or or Grand Anse. Boats are being dry docked, after multiple seasons of non usage. Numerous have already gone bankrupt. Debts linger on. On Grand Anse Praslin, 25 boats are up for sale, sporting Yamaha engines 4 stroke. On Côte d'Or, many operators over the years have folded, drugs has infiltrated, killing some operators, a few have turn to trafficking to pay bank loans. The DMC, Mason's and Creole, have turned a blind eye to the social ills, impact on the community, preferring to focus on bigger numbers, efficiency, profit for their own excursion boats. Profit, profit, profit.

The SPPF and Le Pep have remained silent on legislation, silent on course of action, they have listen now to the community for three (3) years.

LDS has been silent, without pushing the anti monopoly agenda. It does not make it to the next 32 pieces of legislation to be tabled in agreement with Le Pep. The residents of Praslin are outraged.

Hotels For Sale

Numerous hotels on Praslin are now for sale. The likely buyers are the DMC or sister companies. Indian Ocean Lodge, was owned by the Adam family. It was swooped up by Mason's . They now have hotels on Mahe and Praslin, Denis Island.

La Reserve owned by the Pomeroys was swooped up by Joe Albert, the largest monopolist in the Industry. Word is out he is looking at taking Castello and a few other hotels. Combined with Orangine Hotel in La Digue he will soon seal the Four and Five star market, lock in day trip lunches, along with ferry ticketing, and excursions.

Pundits in Le Pep affected by this are mumbling that President Danny Faure should resign, hand over Le Pep to Ton Joe Albert. Ton Joe was recently named to the Board of Directors of the " James Michel Foundation".

Le Pep Holds World Bank Report

Le Pep has yet to make public the World Bank Report submitted by Chris Coles, December 5 th, 2016. Vice President Meriton promised in the last meeting before 40 businesses at Lemuria Hotel that in Four weeks, he will be back on Praslin, with the full presentation. Two weeks has passed, Praslinoise are counting the hours.

Protests at Port Imminent!

The business community is now organizing placards, to start to regularly protest this situation, unabated by the government. They do not blame the operators, they blame the government and the opposition for remaining silent on the matter.

If things keep up as they are, we will eventually run placards that say " Joe For President". After all, no matter what side of the political spectrum one may be, their children have to eat.

Sesel Pou Seselwa!

May God Bless All Freedom Loving Seychellois!

This situation is affecting Mahe aswell. Write about the things drivers at the airport waiting 15 hours for a trip.
Excursions in Beau Vallon going out of business too.

DMCs invest a LOT of money for their marketing programs overseas. At least they are reaping the fruits of their investments.I know a lot of these excursion operators that offer poor service, reaping their customers off, not paying taxes and expecting everything in their favour. Small hardworking hotel owners giving value for money are not selling their properties. Those that don't pay for the consequences. I can go on listing the ills of the industry creating by the very people running it.

In a free society .government keeps the peace ,protects private properties and enforces contracts. And the way government promotes competitions and deal with monopoleis by means of ANTI-TRUSTS(govt has blah blahed about several times but still failing to pass and implement an Anti trust law)..which is absolutely indispensable.A small country or distircts of nine thousand indidivudals cannot allow the economy to be control.monopolize by a small group of individuals often foreigners in the detriment of others .........with limited opportunities ..monopolies can only left the majority hungry .So monopolies must be broken into pieces to allow others to eat and benefit from their economy....and more other all pay license -hence they must be able to live from their licensed business under faire conditions for all.
When you have one company controlling specific market then it prevents the market for setting prices which creates four adverse effects:the monopoly company can set prices at will often high ..which aprtly explain why companies like CAT COC CO charge an astronomic price for its domestic services.....2)such companies can supply bad or inferior products...3)monopolies lose incentive to innovate....4)monopolies crearte inflation...(known as cost-push inflation)

Pl must act and do less speeches -------

Well..illegal boat cahrters operates like champignon on Praslin ,,though not a big island and everybody knows each others ...it seems that only Pl government ,its police is so blind to see the illegal practices taking place on a daily basis.........why is it so diffifcult for pl police to apprehend these illegal operators right here on the beaches of Cote Dor and grnad Anse?Is the island too big for them ,,,is there ,maybe too many people on the island or simply lack of seriousness of the police forces or corruption?it is up to pl to answer Praslinois?

Illegal guesthouses ....just like illegal boat cahrters it is just flaroushing .........though those committed the crimes are known ..still Pl fails to take actions ,,in fact ,to simply implement rules of law --------of course there are many Seychellois who cannot afford to build guesthouses and would like to....but this should not be a reason for pl to tolerate such illegality............for these people .......some could be licensed to operate as (AIR bnb)...or else but not illegal pl......

wHEERE IS THE naTI TRUST LAW PL ....?yOU BLAH BLAH AND FAILED TO ACT...... m<be because these monopolies are a result of pl pass polcies of crook and ignorance perpetrated by ignoramus Michel the donkey ......ditto to these indains and timal tigers who hve invaded our soil and now want to force us to recognize them as MINORITY ETHNIC GROUP of Seychelles ..........Nb Seychelles has never had ethnic group and we will not let these indains and sri lankns ipose their will on usas if they indiegious people of Seychelles ....
it msut be stop ,,passports gifted by Michel to them (thus an illegal act by pl)must be canceleed just as their illegal hindu procession on our roads ......

ANTI TRUST LAW --PL....where is it dog?'''blah blah each year of taking actions ---than you fialed----Monopolies are a product of Michel government maybe that explain why Pl government drag this feet to act ....The monopolists would be unhappy with them --after giving them so much bribes to favoured them and kill Seychelles economy and impede Seychellois from benefiting from their own economy.....

Morevoer ,,pl should take a leaf from chinese book ..namely ensure that foreigne investors^joint- venture with a local-----

I heard the new minister of tourism calling for a"CREOLIZATION of businesses --------something we always call on pl to do so ........Foreign establishment creates financial leakage ,,,,the biggest recruiters fo cheap expat wroekrs ....the main importors of vegetable and fruits even fishes that help kills Seychellois farmers and fishers ...
We need also to reduce the invasive indains and Tmail tigers part of the problem..for they donot only want to control our economy but also our land . too .....

Tourism works, only when the host country insures its people are viable stakeholders in the industry.
Tourism is a fragile and fickle industry.
One incident can turn a country good fortunes into years of financial disaster.
We have seen the tsunami in Thailnd ravage tourism there, it took years to rebuild.
We have seen the double shark attack on Praslin, the island never really recovered, because the government abandoned the recovery effort.
We have seen the rape incident of a German woman at Anse Consolation, resulting in extended cancellations.
Today, we have a man from Germany missing, who probably slipped off a granite rock into the ocean, going to Anse Georgette, because Lemuria makes it hard on Trekkers to get to the beach.
This has resulted in numerous cancellations .
UK High Commission has issued a travel advisory for Seychelles.
Unless we manage the industry carefully, we will lose its benefits.

economic( hiked prices)and social factors(crimes.. ..etc...) affect together the length of stay of a visitors and a tourist destination.TOurism is an economic system ...A country to be successful must have attractions for guests but also be prices attractive...The competiveness of destinations which has established tourism is determined by the diversity,by the quality and price level of the avialabel services .by competency of professional organization responsible for development of tourism and the geographic situation of the destination and by nature and oirgine of financial investments...

Hotels etc ..could ,,,well should decreased prices .while developing offseason tourism could help them compensate the decrease for instance

Lumeria make it hard for both Locals and tourists ...and I am asking myself why pl is still fialing to make these ofriegners who have not legislative rights in our land simply abide by rules of law and government implement ruels of law ......I heard some talkingabtou negociation ------negociate with a foreigner with no legislative rights in our land what?Or maybe the foreigners inclduig pl who think we should negociate with foreigners think foreigners can over rule our laws and act above it ----there isnothing to negociate ..rules of law are clears ...ALL BEACHES IN SEYCHELLES AREPBUBLIC ..poiunt ......just implement the law pl ........we are not going to negociate with foreigners on how things must work in a our soveiregn country .......the latter must know ,aibe by host country lwas ..Now if pl deliberately or by bribes illegal allowed these foreign thugs to do what they want ,,,,,,,,pl must not think it is fiat acompli and we will accept it as such ...just like thousands of Seychelles passprots gifted and sold to indains and sri lankns ,,,we will never recognize such illegal deals ...

Mr faure was clear on the issue --...in fact ,he was clear as the constitution --namely all beaches are pbulci in Seychelles ....He though, tend to say ,,that when it comes to access thrgou private land things are not clear --------wellewhen it comes to access via private land ...the law in there also clear .....all land owners regardless who the hell he or she is ..MUST give access to public beaches via their land ----it has always been this way ........therefore both laws are clear ....namely beaches are PUBLIC and land owners MUST give access to beaches via their land .........As to LEMURIA ...Note that lemuria is built on government land .....2)even the two beaches(not only Anse georgette)whereby lemuria has built rooms are also PUBLIC ;Di5to on Fregate,North island (though Seychellois normally do not go to the two last named islands)...on beaches in front Kempski hotel ...I a word ..any beaches regardless where ....

As to memorandum of big hotel construction ....it has been extended to two years ...not enough ...should be exptended for 20 yeaRS ...FRANKLY ..SEYCHLELS HAS ENOUGH BIG HOTELS ..SOME OVERSIEIZE .........I WOZULD EVEN SAY ..SEYCHELLES HAS ENOUGH HOTELS REGARDLESS OF SEZIE ..........TOO MANY HOTELS REGARDLESS OF SIEZE IN THE UFUTRE WOULD MEANS MASS TOURSISM AT LOW COST ....BAD FOR A DESTIANTION .ENVIRONEMNT ..WASTAGE ,WATER USAGE ETC ...
I BELVIE THE OGVERNEMNT SHOULD PROMOTE fooseason tourisms othhat eixsitng hotels have a longer season ..to compensate building more hotels .....
Maybe ,develop our outter island ,,,,some for hotels and some for farming etc......

Anonymous said...

not need for more hotles ..memorandum should be extended to 20 years ---concentrate instead on developing OFFSEASON tourism .....

Domestic air service ---go move ------unfortunately the same rule should have been inc luded to Domestic ferry services ........I mean ,,,,should be open to other Seychellois who wants to provide inter island ferry service in order to compete with CAT COCO and force the later to reduce fee......

MONOPOLY is a BIG problem that MR faure did not address but hopefully his finance minster will soon......for it is killing our economy ,making Seychellois hungry ,financé leakage etc....bad for a small limited economy aas the country and our people.

Very good speech by Faure ...not only a god speech but once more Faure is proving that he is a man of actions ...........I rember Michel self proclaimed himself as MAN OF THE PEOPLE. which of course he never was ...unlike Michel Faure seems on the way to earn the title of real man of the people...he has turn 360 degrees from Michels fialed polcies .....he is putting Seychellois first and ensuring that rules of law are abide with regardless who.....Bravo Faure --keep it up!If you continue like this ,,in four years ,you will be elected President....you even surprising LDS by your actions and seriousness.....

open air for domestic flight competition ,,,,,should have been the same to domestic ferry ..cat co co should face competition in order that it stops sucking customers with artificial and astronomic price hikes .....
Monopoly which is a big devastating economic problem --unfortunately not in Mr Faure speech ,,,hopefully the finance minster would get his part done.

COCO de MEr ..excellent Mr Faure... ..GIve ceasar what belongs to Ceasar .....in other words Keeps what belong to Praslin in Praslin.........

You have my support Mr faure....and if you continue on this path ......you will be compensated in four years by Seychellois ......First President ever to put Seychelles and Seychellois first practically .......
