Seychelles Carnival Brilliant Marketing Impetus!
I read the Today this week, on the occasion of Nicole Tirant's intervention on the Seychelles Carnival wherein she questioned the value of the Seychelles Carnival. She noted that there were three or four news houses that attended less then the year before. She noted rightly that there were less countries represented this year then the year before.
All this shallow insignificant points presented dabbled in the esoteric question: " Is The Carnival Worth It?"
The column could have been used for an article that could really get our country to focus on what matters. I agree with a lot of commentaries Nicole Tirant makes, but this one on the Seychelles Carnival is way off to Mars, out of touch with our reality. If Nicole Tirant needs a point of reference, review the Tourism arrivals under Simone Testa ex Minister of Tourism, review arrivals when Francis Savy was photographing Seychelles in black and white, when at STB, and see the numbers of Arrivals when Joseph Belmont was Minister of Tourism.
Then reflect. Carnival is not the sole means of marketing Seychelles in the digital age, but it is a key impetus to expose Seychelles internationally.
ST. Ange is The Ultimate Man of Resourcefulness
Minister St. Ange has an un canning ability to make something out of nothing. It is a gift, well rooted in his humble beginnings on La Digue where there were no cars, there were no planes, and a Digious could not even dream of ever riding a train during his early years.
It's beaches leave much to be desired. Anse Source D'Argent, named the "Best Beach in The World", should more rightly be classified as the " Beach with the Best Rocks" In any case, St. Ange is brilliant at making lemonade from lemons while everyone else complains that we have just lemons on the table. St. Ange never complained. He took what he had to work with, and he made the most of it. This is what Seychelles Carnival does for us.
Numbers Do Not Lie!
This un canning sense of resourcefulness has resulted in a consistent 19% increase in arrivals year on year! for the last Five (5) years. Who can complain about St. Ange's strategy? No one.
Perhaps we can make suggestions on how to improve it, and tweek it here and there, but over all, his Carnival strategy has been a winner when combined with his full energy attack at trade fairs, and full energy attack on digital media. He has become famous for running press releases on anything that happens in Seychelles. In turn, Seychelles is kept in the world press, and in the hearts of the Public as a possible holiday destination.
127 Press Houses Attend
Seychelles Carnival, brings with it a message of World Peace. Who at TODAY can argue with that? With this message, which St. Ange sound bites all year on the road, he invites all press he meets, to come to Seychelles, and experience this wonderful kaleidoscope he call his home, where what race you are is not relevant, what sex you are, is your business, not governments, what religion you are, no one will question. We are living example that tolerance, mutual respect, is a formula for enduring Peace, in paradise.
With this message, he invites hundreds of press houses. Not all turn up, but those that do, experience Seychelles, put her on the World map, all year long. The press corps comes for Carnival, but they visit Seychelles, feel her, experience what we offer and they write travel articles and freelance them around the World. Who can object?
Success Breeds Success
When Sherin Naiken was on CNN being interviewed bookings for three months soared. Now with Sky News covering Seychelles bookings will soar for another three months. Seychelles does not suffer from lack of interest, most of the world is intrigued by this fascinating island state, that is known to be the Garden of Eden ( Praslin, not La Digue), home of the Best Beaches in The World ( Anse Lazio, Praslin, Anse a Georgette, Praslin again) and the amazing records we have with Mossac- Fonseca in the offshore world. Life will go on.
What Seychelles Needs
Seychelles needs more flights inbound to cope with the demand for Seychelles. For this we need to partner with airlines to stimulate the demand. In turn higher arrivals will give us all the opportunity to have our fair share of the Tourism cake, if government makes a commitment to see that done, instead of keeping us under a modern plantation system.
Yes the Monopoly Era in Tourism must end. But it must end with empowering bona Fide Seychellois investors, not disenfranchising them. Government has a tall order, but it must deliver or suffer the consequences of non performance.
Much has been done. Much remains to be done. Do not blame the Carnival if things are not perfect. It is an event that celebrates us hand in hand, with the World. Guess what......it works!
Now we have to fix the points that do not work as well. This is where the focus should be .

May God Bless All Freedom Loving Seychellois!

Nice article.
The news releases are coming out of our ears now.
Me. Gill you are right. When Belmomt was Minister of a tourism the arrivals drop.
Never put a mazambik in the shoes of a blan.
I do not know about the mazambik thing, but the point is clear, St. ange has exceed expectations.
Without him. We would all be starving.
Wake up!
This includes Pl, and opposition.

Bravo Alain! Bravo!
Tirants comment shows her ignorance of her own.history and roots.Carnival Tirant ,is foremost achristian festivity during LENT,,, we inherited it 400 years ago when Seychelles was created as a Nation........Like Sega, moutia, kantole it is a reflection of our identity ...who we are .
Carnival was always an important festivity in seychellois culture, but was silenced and stopped by Ak 47 in 1976,,a replaced by fake communist celebration called 5thJune.It was pl ways to destroy our identity.
SHOULD WE DANCE SEGA,MOUTUA Tirant u donkey?
Carnival is true, trough the last century has also become one major and important party of many countries way of attracting Visitors..I Brazil,we all know the impact of this country tourism....But let me take Trnidad and Tabago,as example, for it is an island state like Seychelles.Since Trinidad reintroduced Carnival as part of its tourism promotion in 1990,it has sern an increase of arrivals by 60% and genrating a revenue of U,$ 100million annually....Of course,Seychelles Carnival will take sometimes to realky impact fully our tourism industry........in fact if pl atheists did not ban our geniune celebration 40years ago to replace it by 5th june,,,,,today our cpuntry would have brnefit fully from our Carnival impact as Brazil and Trinidad.....
The auestion Tirant should be asking is...should we tolerate the illrgal Hinfu religious proccession conducted by Expat workers on our soilvand which has nothing to do culturally, traditionally, religiously with Seychellois?our this over size hindu temple built on.out doil for hindu rxpats?
What about the fake Indian/seychellois or Chinese/,,seychelles celebrazion which is a pl imposed celebrations on us ,zhough no Seychellois find themselves in zhem, for they are fake.
Maybe Tirant may stop throeing tax payers money away,by canceling zhis costly and good for nothing Miss Seychrlles..
Carnival Tirant before it is an excellent means to attract Cultural Tourism,it is part of our heritage and identity, like our Sega, moutia,,we dance sega in the first place not because it attract tourists, but part of our identity, who we are Donkry
It is a celebration of life which allow us to learn more about ourselves. It is a reflection of ancestral Seychellois experience. It isnot just about meritment it about who we are ;Tirant.
Carnival as our flokore Dnace Sega,Moutia ,Kmatole etc ...w
have been always part of our heritage.......It is in fact PL thugs who deliberately cancelled it in 1977 . and replace it with 5th June ,,,a pl invented ceelbration with no historically background to it.
Just as the DEWALI hindu Clelbration that pl want to impose on us ,,as if seychellois are Indians or we should abandone our heritage and celebrations to worship Indian gods who have nothing ,,no connection with our people ....
Should we celebrate our folkore Music Tirant?Apparently for ignoramus Tirant ,it is YES... for she ignores her own root........she looks like a tree without root....that explain maybe why Tirant as other Pl atheists think Hindu relgious procession ,conducted by Indian Expats SHOULD BE A nATIONAL Event IN CHRISTIAN sEYCHELLES,WHICH HELP DESTORY sEYCHELLOIS CuLTURE And tradition......
Abandone CHinese/SEZ,Indain /SEZ celebraqtions for no seychellois find thmelseves in them ..Maybe ABANDANE mISS sEYCHELLES ..FOR IT IS A WASTE OG TAX MONEY WITH NO BENEFIT BEHIND..
sEYCHELLES CARNIVAL WILL FIND ITS TURE AND FULL IMPACT ON THE LONG TERM ,,AS IT DOES IN bRAZIL Trinidad,AND OTHER CHRISTIAN Nation .......THIS IS A fact ,that could be test and proven......as RIo carnival........
Should Pl asthesits not repaLCE IT WITH FAKE CELBRATIONS LIKE %TH jUNE ,,,TODAY WE WOULD BE ENJOYING ITS FULL IMPACT AS bRAZILIAN DO IN Rio cARNIVAL.......
pl DESTORYED OUR cARNIVAL AS IT DESTROY sEYCHELLES MOST POIPUALR fESTIVITY ,,WHICH WAS sTE Annne Day ,,,celebrate by Rpasliunois ......IUt was os popular thaT SHIPS TRAVEL NON STOP BETZWEEN mAHE AND pRASLIN TO CARRY mAHELOIS TO pRASLIN ......IT WAS MORE IMPORTANT THAT rewgatta OTDAY ....THERE WAS CELEBRATION WHICH ATTRACTED MORE SEYCHELLOIS THAN stze anne feast ...aGgain cancelled by asthesits pl to impose 5th june on us ...a pl asthiest religoius celebration that no one find themselves in .....
Tirant your ignarance ,make you a shame ....you should go a dig your head in the sand donkey ..........or go back to school..
St. ange gets a budget to run his strategy.
As long as he is delivering I find no issue with how he brings them in.
St. ange job is - 1. Bring them in, 19% per year is considered to be bringing the, in; 2. Make sure the tourism pie enfranchises Seychellois, not displace them.
The second point is where is he challenged. The first point he has met the targets.
On the second point, we face under St. ange a big monopoly of operations by DMC which affects Praslin adversely, given both DMC have numerous charter operations in place, and own operate hotels buses etc... Also establishments like Lemuria and a Raffles make it hard for operators to access guests.
On this issues, he must work hard and this is the battle ground, he must win.
The press needs to sharpen up and get smarter, stop wasting ink to paper. If not, at less read the blog like everyone else.

Totally agree. When it comes to dealing with monopoly,pl has made a few bla blah noise but no practical actions. In fact pl members advertise monopolists.E,g,Mitsy told us the Les Mamelles Hospital had dekay because the, contractor,,,LAXAMBAI was buildings its OWN APARTMENTS. .in other words laxambgai is also doing,Apartment Rental Business approved by Pl.
Praslin would have a new port atxa cost of sr 50,millions,,tax money..Zhe boat that use ports built with tax money the most when it comes to the Port of Praslin is Cat coco .. My question is,would pl charge catcoco high docking cost,or tax so that tax payers get bsck their money.........?
Only cat roses pays the docking fees.
Catcocos does not pay. I work in the port accounts.
Well pl must make cat coco pay it dues or reduce its astronomic price ticket......for catcoco is not a state owed company to benefit from tsx or duty fee docking...
For catco co has over 10 trips daily, thus the main user of the dock...if Roses eho uses the dock once daily pay tax or fee, catcoco has an obligation to pay it dues too.
More arrivals but noxincrease in revenues for tourism, sector.Naiken attempted to give us a n unconvincing reason.... The reason is brcause zhey all went to five star hotels offering two star hotel prices and all revenues collected and banked abroad....
When u have five all inclusive offering price of a two STAR withcfive star services then clients will go to five stars.. that is the problem a problem created by pl policy and its laissez faire habits.........
Agreed..
What happen to st. ange / STB star ratings due to take effect January 1st, 2016?
