Ministry of Lands Pushes UCPS To Near Shutdown!

UCPS boss Joseph Albert has alerted all press, that UCPS is facing shut down of its impressive state of the art quarry material, block production site that has delivered construction material, to build Seychelles to what it is today, since 1970.

Lest We Forget

Albert took over UCPS in an era wherein rocks were broke by hand, collected by Seychellois men and women with gunny sacks and bamboo hampers, stacked manually, loaded manually. This is how building works started. After substantial investments and a strategy of modernization in place, targeted to deal with Seychelles tough granite boulders, convert them to dust, stones, blocks, fully automated, UCPS evolved from being a slave like operation, to a full fledged state of art quarry and construction materials service provider. A Seychellois saw a problem, he also saw the opportunities, concluded, " we can do it" and with his team, they did.

Get The Job Done

When SBC showed a Chinese contractor digging with an old machine on the South East island for quarry product, the Seychellois public lost patience with the Ministry of Lands.  This Mickey Mouse operation looked like a office joke. One only ask, what did the Chinese pay under the table for this concession, while UCPS ran out of rocks?  It just does not add up.

Drop Prices
UCPS responded to Ministry of Lands confirming it will drop prices, in spite of an increase in cost to quarry rocks from red dirt. The gesture is applaudable, but likely makes no business sense. Seychelles leaders, need to get back to some reality checks.

No Quarry No Building

Reality is upon us. No quarry, no building. UCPS has ask for alternate site for Fifteen years, at Au cap. In reply, Minister of Lands, Mr. Charles Bastienne says environment has yet to express a position on the matter. Fifteen years is a long time to file a report. It exposes also what generally, most Seychellois are coming to understand, the selective prosecution of individuals and companies, using the environmental card as a raison etre to bar projects and development. This strategy is a defeatist strategy, because in the end, we destroy Seychellois " can do initiative", when government should be doing all it can, to push Seychellois to " do everything , they can do".

The Goose and The Gander

The saying goes like this: " what is good for the goose, is good for the gander". This is a famous English saying, made popular in Seychelles, by Mrs. Sarah Rene.

While government has traditionally play the environment card on Seychellois maliciously, it has ignored the environment card when foreigners invested in Seychelles. Case in fact, Savoy Hotel, Raffles oil spill ongoing into a marine park, Lemuria Hotel, where they buried hundreds of Takamaka trees under neath the golf course, Eden Island where dredging of the coast and destruction of that Eco system was justified. The list is really endless. But the point made. The Goose had its time on us.

Today, the Gander ( Seychellois public) has protested, petitioned the death of the Cap Ternay Emirates Hotel Development. Now, most recently, a petition to stop the mega hotel,Marina development on Grand Police was submitted to State House. The Gander is biting back.

Get Sensible and Serious

Seychelles must get sensible and realistic about the environment. Environmental extremism is a dangerous political tool. It is poison to economic growth, acid to investor confidence, and an accelerator to capital flight, inflation, devaluation, and divestment. It numbs Foreign direct investment ( FDI), freezes salaries, forces the population out of their cars, back into buses and on to bicycles to get to work.

Today, let us send a serious message to government: Seychellois want to live well. We want development., because that guarantees we will live well, if we work hard and fairly. We want Seychellois to be given Priority  AND encouraged Actively, to develop in their own country, for in China, we will all have to start by collecting tea leaves.

I trust the point is clear.

Sesel Pou Seselwa!

May God Bless All Freedom Loving Seychellois!

The solution is simple. Ask Ton Joe to dig the tunnels under the mountains. He keeps all the granite for his business and we get the tunnels. That's what we call killing two birds with one stone. Oli problem?

Anonymous said...

It's a proposal.

WHEN ALL IS SAID AND DONE RAZIN, YOU SHOULD TAKE A TOUR AT YOUR LOCAL AMITIER DUMPS SITE,THAT IS AN ENVIRONMENTAL DISASTER HAPPENING RIGHT IN THE PRASLIN'S BREAD BASKET..
AND WHEN YOU FLY TO MAHE NEXT TIME JUST OBSERVE THE TOXIC MOUNTAIN RISING ON THE PRIME REAL ESTATE ON MAHE..YES YOU ARE IN THE GRAVY , GREAT FOR YOU. BUT WHAT ABOUT YOUR CHILDREN AND THEIR CHILDREN..

I missed the above deletion.

One question keep popping up,will MAHE ever ran out of rocks for UCPS?

One thing is coconuts will never be running low, even at 50 rupees a piece for tourist.

Minister of environment Dogley must present a serious plan to resolve dump site issues.
Specific time frames should be provided.
This problems falls on his desk, on his watch.
He will not be able to just talk turtle over it.

Ton Joe looks like a real Hollywood actor in this picture. On a very serious note, Ton Joe does not need any favours from GOS, all he needs is a fair deal to get fresh stocks of granite to keep the production line going. I am sure Ton Joe himself can identify a site with good stock of granite that he can extract. If planned properly, Ton Joe can extract such granite from strategic sites to create a dam in return. Food for thought.

With regards to our dumpsite, there are affordable, modern, clean incinerators that is ideal for Seychelles. These are very effective French made incinerators which produces energy. The by product is sand which can be used in the constrction industry. I am not sure we produce enough waste to meet our total sand demand in the current construction climate. However, with such technology we do not have to worry about smelly dumpsite. We obviously do not want to end up with a situation like the Maldives.

Anonymous said...

Ton Joe doesn't LOOK like a Hollywood actor. He is the real deal. The one and only Ton Joe. TON JOE FOR PRESIDENT!

Anonymous said...

Minister Dogley of environment needs to come up with a serious plan for reducing dump site over load. On La Digue it is serious.
On Praslin it is worse.
Ton Joe is a viable option for President.

At least he will not rely on Arab money to get the job done.

Vijay I understand will now form his own party. Vijay National Front.

Anonymous said...

Seriously, will Ton Joe have time to run a country. He is doing a fine job Chairing his empire....

Anonymous said...

He can hire managers.

Anonymous said...

And you can bet that people that he will appoint as ministers will be folks with intelligence and INTERGRITY, and not imbeciles and crooks that we've had in the past.

Anonymous said...

Vijay is running for President as well.
He will recruit cheap labor ministers.
Bribery and fraud experience will be helpful and favored of course.

Correction to your article. UCPS have excluvity to South east Island. If you see old equipment on SE island it belongs to Joe Albert

Anonymous said...

Your statement is false.
The license held by UCPS was lapse in time.
SBC filmed an old excavator crawling on the site on one side, digging ros from soil, which is highly costly. The operator was even Chinese.
We also all know UCPS has equipment very well maintained and high quality.
On this we cannot argue with UCPS.
Example, on his landi crafts brought in to carry his equipment he uses new tires on them as bumpers, not old second hand tires. His trucks and equipment regularly serviced and painted. UnlikeVijay who drives his equipment into the ground, never paints any thing.
This style, UCPS has says a lot about the mind of the person. It emulates pride, integrity, dignity on the job.
Give credit where it is merited. Critique where it is required.

Mr Gill, Even the picture you use in your article is on SE island. I believe it was only taken last week. What is Joe Albert doing on SE island showing the minister around if he does not run the quarry. Secondly Joe Albert only cares about Joe Albert. Even you have said Creole Holidays operate a monopoly on Praslin. Who Owns Creole Holidays. Joe Albert. Not too sure when you last visited La Digue but look at the nice beach next to Anse Kalis in the La passe harbour. Now a rock armoured beach courtesy of Joe Albert and UCPS just to prevent locals from having picnics or swimming next to Domaine de Lorangerie. Who owns Domaine de Lorangerie. Joe Albert.

Joe Albert has done an excellent job at UCPS. His company has invested, upgraded, delivered supply, meeting demand of the public.
Government should resolve this quarry matter shortage.
On La Digue, a little patatran planted next to the rocks, can make this area beautiful, in no time. The question to be posed is who ga the permits for the reclaim. Was it not government?
On Praslin, clearly Joealbert companies maintain a dominant position in the market place, side by side with Mason Travel. Creole Travel has come to the table to work out issues presented. Mason's has not. This compels government to deal with the monopoly issue because it is government s job. Mr. Albert just took advantage opportunities government neglected to regulate in a timely manner. Mason the same.

Joe Albert's effort to rectify matters is applaudable, shows class, Savoir Faire. Others should follow his example. Being pig headed or " English" as our forefathers would say, over this matter will not resolve matters, it will just send Praslin down the protest line.

It took pl 40 plus year to build a WC...what a shame

Anonymous said...

Not only that they did not build any WC in 40 years; but they also deprived us of our 'jungle toilets' near the beaches. All the shrubs and bushes have been cleared by the Arabs and Russians. Now when we have to answer a call a nature we have to do it in the sea itself and allow other people to swim in it. We have no choice really. We have nowhere else to relieve ourselves in private. In we can afford to spend millions on a monstrosity called a 'music stadium', and millions more on carnival so that some Brazilians can dance in G-string in the streets, then we could certainly afford to build some public toilets in town and across the country.

3.57 Carnival has its origine is christainity and all Christian based soceities practice carnivals including Seychelles.Carnival is another way to promote our land abroad AND IT SHOWS WHO WE ARE ,WHERE WE COME FROM ..... Now when you make allusion with the facts that mmoney is spend to import Brazilian etc ..to our shores to participate in our carnival .....Yes .that is a waste of money for Seychelles carnival should represent ,promote Seychelles not Brazil or other coubntries ..and its purpose is to attract tourists not foreign dancers ......
Morevoer .Carnival is an intergrarte part of Seychelles culture and it has been practicing carnivals since our existence as Christain Nation for cneturies unti lit was stopped bz Pl with ak 47s in order to replace it with Moaist, lenisnst and yo8ng pioneers and militarz parade.......What we doing today is reviving part of our forgotten culturwe.

What is not part of our culture is the illegal hindu religious procession conducted by indains illegally living in or hilleglly holding our passports and calling them selves Seychellois .....what is not part of our culture and people is indains trying with the help of pl atheists to artificially create ethnic group in our land ...Seychelles never had ethnic group and of course we will not indains who are in their majority illegal in our land create fake ethnic group in our land in order to create ethnic conflicts thereby import the ethnic wars and conflicts into our land to divide and destroy our peace and stability.
On toilette there were more public before indenpence than since when pl illegally took power ,,,and all these british built WC were left abandone by pl....

Yes government has an obligation to protect Seychellois interests and put Seychellois first in their homeland not Indians ,not arabs not russians .....and above all ,,,Seychellois must HAVE CERTAIN ECONOMIC SOVEIREGNTY thast is pl .certain important businesses .assets must be protected and defence at all cost by state ..which is a common practice in western world ...maybe does not understand the meaning of economic sovereignty ...it is important industries crucial for the countrz ,,Example in Feence ,,the French will never allow that nuclear plants be sold or owed by any foreign companies or indidivduals ,,for it is strategic and considered economic soveiregnty ....

To build a couple of public toilets is not a complicated thing to do. It's not rocket science. Yet those same people wanted us to believe that they were going to launch our very own communication satellite into orbit. Such bizarre absurdity can only happen in Africa; where can have ability to have satellites in orbit, but we cannot build a few sheds, aka public toilets, for people to shit in.

4,28\Gill is right when he said"St ange is not inchargew for building Public toilettes"It is up to district mayor to ensure that public facitilies from enough bus stop ,water supply .public WCs etc.... are available in their districts .....
Instead of the absurb idea of having our own satelities which we donot really know for what ..pl should start working on renewable energy in order to solve our long on going energy shortage...reduce cost on usage of fossil fuel//etc /these have general 8impact as the abusrb idea of a satelites 'We need renewable energy ,,,more public toilettes .a new International airport,,, We also it seems we need eyes surgeons due to many cases of eyes problems sechellois faced instead of depending on lion club whatever thye name...development of small and medium businesess to boost productivity ,creater more jobs for Seychellois,,a real marine fire brigade and rescue though it could be part of the coast guard with a small unit based on Praslin to deal with cases around Praslin ,la digue etc ..... etc..etc..etc...

You make accusations without solid facts.
The Seselwa rasin ideology today is alive and well.
I have let no one down.
The MSR was denied political party registration by Judge Karanukaran.
I met with him, ask him why he did that, without legal basis, he added: " I cannot allow your ideology exist if I am a Fabrike, I just obtained citizenship and I have been under GOP all these years."
SFP was formed, after, but few lend a hand to move the agenda. All expenses were borne by myself.
The day Seychellois stand upon themselves, is the day change will take place.
In the meantime, do blame those who sacrifice the most on the front lines.
In retaliation to this ideology, James Michel turned most of our family land into a nature reserve. This was undone last year in the Talma case.
Stop bitching, start thinking smart, then act smart. Change will come.
If you just bitch and moan, nothing will change, Seychellois will lose their country.

it is Gill who called on the opposition to unite and win ,,,they did and won thus helped change the poltical landscape and his actions have helped empowered Seychellois make them more participative in politics and societal issues.
it is Gill who exposes polticians abuses and mis-mamangement of our institutions.
