Seychelles Democracy Goes Into Over Drive!

On October 16th, 2016, James Michel resigned as President of Republic of Seychelles, after just being elected by 183 votes in a highly controversial election campaign, which faced judicial review of the Courts of Seychelles. Many concluded, it was the Constitutional Court of three Justices that gave Mr. Michel his mandate, not the People. No time to count hairs, a victory is a victory. A mandate however you slice it, is a mandate.

Enter President Danny Faure
As James Michel stepped aside to allow a younger, more energetic, Vice President to deal with the harangue mess left behind, Seychelles met a key moment with history. President Faure inherited a National Assembly whose majority control was in the hands of the Opposition LDS. His break away Minister Patrick Pillay, along with Simon De Commarmond, Noelie Alexander and others, had dealt a decisive blow to James a Michel politically. Losing control of the National Assembly, is political meltdown for a Executive Branch. As Danny Faure was asked by James Michel to go see what he can do with IMF to sort out our national bankruptcy, he now faced political bankruptcy and he turned to Danny Faure to navigate through the mess.

Danny Faure Man of The Hour

Faure left nothing to doubt and he left no stone unturned to refocus the Nation, on genuine unity, genuine Nation building. In his initiation all speech, he challenged his own parties style, of defiance, and made a first ever, Public Apology to The Nation for any wrong, any victimization his party may have caused along the way. The position was a stark contrast to James Michel last speech: " regrets.......I have none", my favorite song: " I Did It My Way".  In a phrase, Michel's posture is perhaps been his worse enemy all along. With arrogance of that level, who can be blame for exposing Michel on digital media, to the point, his confidant Lise Bastienne said: " .......they assassinated his character on Facebook". Facebook can work that way only if there is material.

No doubt, the apology was a historical step. President Faure went further to shore up the bleeding in his party, and perhaps the Nation. Politically, a very astute person, since when he was very young, President Faure made his own appeal for genuine National Reconciliation. We must let it out he said. The country must deal with victimization, and we must cry if we must, but we must also move on as a country, and as one people. ( The words are of course the easy part. The challenge comes in the walk).

In any case, Faure was the man of the hour, as he appealed for a new way forward. While his appeal is cast in circumstance of internal implosion, Le Pep could not have a better man in its ICU room. While Patrick Pillay, Speaker of the National Assembly attended the transfer of power ceremony as any dignified Public Servant should, Wavel Ramkalawan, Leader of Opposition was absent. He was waiting in Absentia to become President, and then at that ceremony, he would wish that President Danny Faure will demonstrate Savoir Vivre culture, decency, so attend.

Faure Meets and Addresses The National Assembly
President Faure did a meet and greet of the National Assembly, invoked provisions of the Constitution to deliver a speech before parliament to spread his message of Unity, National Reconciliation, and the need to work together. While the casting of the times required such a move, it could not have come from a better person to do it, for Le Pep and yes, for the LDS Opposition. Can you imagine Joel Morgan being given this task? He would never bother to even take your phone call.

President Faure was no fool to invoke this section of the constitution. In attendance, he invited the Seychelles Inter Faith Committee to attend his address. If Ramkalawan resorts to bullying, which is his nature and with a majority in parliament, it is easy to bully, the Inter Faith Committee will be there to remind Father Ramkalwan, that he is a Priest, and he must walk in Jesus foot steps, not John Holmes.

As can be entrusted, Speaker Pillay was there, to keep order, keep everyone on the path of national unity and focus on what is right for our people and our country.

Seeds For Unity Sowed

The seeds of unity have been sowed by President Danny Faure. Given our history, given our circumstance, it is indeed a monumental effort and ambition. The soil will be turned in the National Assembly, we should welcome this. Turned soil allows for oxygen to reach roots, and make plants stronger. There will be dry seasons, there will be rainy seasons. The seeds will become plants. From plants we will bear fruit of what really has been sown.

For today, we must embrace each other, one and all, for we are Seychellois, and on this path of National unity, the President has spoken, we all must now adjust our dance steps to his, or face the Inter Faith Committee for trespass of the will of God that we should live in Peace.

Honorable Mentions For The Week

Flory Larue- gave a serious challenge to President Faure. Remove. Zomn Lib from town and drop the name Revolution Avenue

Wavel Woodcock- Highlight the plight of a Praslin under the oppression of two large companies.

Bernard George's- told Le Pep LDS wants power , wants State House. ( Some things in life, are better left unmentioned). Faure will probably PARDON him and get more political mileage out of it.

Trust me folks, it's better to work together, then to fight together. Please lead by example, the Nation is watching you.

Sesel Pou Seselwa!

May God Bless All Freedom Loving Seychellios!

.Excellent article.RAM the incompetent should change his way and dig in deep his little brain the idea, that it takes two to tango. He should not protest the fact that Faure is president....as MPs,Ram never even rasied the issue and modification fo the Constitution bnack then and even qwuestion this modfication ,in fact ,he mutally approved .Remeber also where RAm was when Michel declared himslef President in the alst election ---you have forgotten ...let me remind yxou -----Instead of going to block state gates and fight for his vote ..RAm went wave(l)ing at Anse Royal......patheitc isnot it..
flory is right to point out ...that Zom libre should be buried with RENE soon .or hand it over to RAm as sovenir from his Father and he can put it in his garden..revolution avenue which represents coup detat and pl dictatorship should surely be changed ,--dito to the " Assembly" (usually use in communist countries )with the word PARLIAMENT.

Tamil life matters too.
He is a Priest, he need to act like a Sheperd and Sheeps need to follow.

All Politician are crooked and rich.....if not rich ....he/she don't know how to steal.
Exemple: look at all Pl members and Ministers how rich they are...big,fancy houses with air condition...brand new cars..
How make them rich, it's US .....we keep voting for the same to control our lives.
TRUE or NOT? This is where they start to be corrupted,,,,,too long in a system,.....they make holes.....they bend the rules.....and they SMILE with you ....what you do? Yes you clap your hand with them ....when they head home ....they say to themself, " ZOT SESELWA I VREMAN KOUYON.
Fer mwan mazin sa parol ki FAR ti dir.........ZOT don'n mwan en poul ....mon vol ZOT en bef!,

Excellent article.......

Tamil life matters ,however, we/Seychelles government cannot replace Sri Lankan government obligations and duties toward its people.
All pl members are rich --well it is often the case in dictatorship......when there is no checks and balance ,,,,,,politicians serve themselves from people coffers.
I disagree ,we did not vote for Rene ,Michel to control our lives ,they used ak 47 to impose their will on us ....it is totally different for electing a government freely and fairly in democratic election.....^

As to RAm,he failed us as a Priest,he failed us as Opposition leader, he failed us as MP,he failed us as Presidential candidates......In other words ..... Flip-flopping ,inconsistency is Rams political trade mark.My piece of advice to Ram ,is to follow in Michel footsteps and get out of politics--- ,you have done to much harm to the country by your incompetency and slaverish mentality ...we cannot afford it anymore.

Flory said .:remove Zom libre ---I agree .....it could be buried soon ,with Rene or gift it to RAM as souvenir for his later father......he could place it in his garden and worship it if he want to...
--change the name revolution avenue to something that represent all Seychellois -Dito to changing ASSEMBLY(which represents communism)t PARLIAMENT.

Flory said it from the heart, she touched us all. I wanted to cry when she said- " Msye Danny Faure si ou serve ek rekonsilasyon tir Zomn Lib dan la vil. " Wow, that statement put a challenge to Danny Faure that balances his career, a life's work, with one question: do I really intend to serve ALL Seychellios or am I just serving a few and fooling the rest?"
Faure MUST reply to Miss Flory Larue.
We must hold him to this. If he removes Zomn Lib then we know the game is on for reconciliation. If not hit the streets.

RAM will go into history as one of the most incompetent, sinsiter , imoral, as well as intellectally void politician at its best and of all time .......Unlike ,RAM... FAure demonstrates the character of a truthworthy politician. He is moving above himself and ready to serve society and move beyond the primitive need of power.

I am not a Pl supporter ..but i am ready to give Faure my support should he walk the talk for the benefit of our country and people. He has show humility in his inauguration speech...i trust his words while i give him the time he needs to prove himself. As to RAM i will make sure he goes to where he belong .namely in retirememnt from Poltics and go join Michel for a party of cards .Calou ,Lapire .....

RAMCHANDRA principles of life which Ramkalawan cabinet is to be run under-

1. Be gentle and kind. RAMCHANDRA once came along a bridge of two great oceans. He saw a squirrel. He grabbed it, pet. It, helped it get to the other side.

2. Make great sacrifices. RAMCHANDRA made great sacrifices in his life. When challenged by a Prince to show his great ness in sacrifice, RAMCHANDRA took his wife, killed her, said to the Prince there, I have made the greatest sacrifice.

3-5 coming up.

Anonymous said...

3. Lesson Three - before the murder of his wife, by himself, Ramchandra"s wife was kidnapped. He left no stone unturned to find her. The will to find her made him wage war on Ravana to take her back home.

4.lesson 4 - Ram waged war on Lanka Hindis. This showed how grateful he is and helpful .

5. Lesson Five - be compassionate. If a squirrel runs from you, let it go. If it comes back to you, it was meant to be.

Ah wi, noun bête Ramkalawan!

Who do you think can replace the millionaire priest.
Sure Pillay dont.
Any suggestion?
They are all devils and most of them in the LDS were from party in power!
They went to talk to Faure at State House and all of them refused a cup of tea!

What happen in Venezuela can happen in Seychelles

Can someone disagree with that?

I agree with u ,that some members of LDS were once Pl members .....U know what,i believe that a man can change and for good.Check this out,Pillay walked out of pl polite buro, what he did next ?Well ,He united the Opposition and brought it as majority into the Parliament, and finally brought the change Ram could never delivered for decade to the people of Seychelles...Should we not be praising Pillay for that rather than sticking with rhetorics that for decades divivded and hold the country back.
The one who refused the cup of tea ,,I guess what father RAM ..the millionaire Priest ..a millionaire like RAM does not drink tea but a good glass of expensive champagne.....a drink Michel used to get him in order docile him when he was Stooge Opposition leader.Hving said that ..it is not a the refusal of a cup of tea what would devide them I assumed ..it would be a cheap argument to throw to the people at execuse...

i donot support the idea of.. as you put it"RAm wage war against Sri Lankan" or any other groups of foreign workers.........It is not endemic to RAm as a politician to defence the sovereignty, independence ,identity of Seychellois ..I is a duty of all politicans and the people to do so ..... by the way that what all sovereign nations do ..it is universality practice by all government as part of the obligations and duties.E.g Indain govt defence its territories in KASHMIR,Irakian govt aginst teorrists,etc..etc..etc...

Are you following what taking place in Calais French ....?French government wants its sovereignty and any foreign individuals or groups on its territories to abide ,respect French territories and laws ,,and not create an illegal little state made with immigrant within French territories........It is not a War ,but putting order and making foreigners respect host country or if not leave ---..It is a constitutional duty of the French government toward its people..........simply saying --guests ,or else must respect host country laws etc.. not impose their own law on the host.In other words host only should and can decide who they want to host ,the amount they want to host etc.. in their land not the guest or in french case the illegal immigrants.

Mr. Gill I read the comments attacking you for nothing in your last article. I feel very bad. I know you and your family are very good honest people. I see you in church every Sunday praying with your daughter and wife. I know you are a good person. I cannot let you get hurt. Wavel Ramkalawan sent Nicolas après to Praslin two weeks ago to take pictures of your land and house. He has pictures of your house he is going to put it on newspaper because it is much bigger then his house. He really has a problem with you. Be careful.

At this time of LDS reconsilation with Pl Ram will never perform this stupid act.

That said don't think I am an SNP supporter.....only LDS!

Another scenario is PL want Christopher badly to help with the administration since they know he is smarter then most of them in PL camp.

Right now Seychelles once a Paradise is rapped by PL.

And the People let this happen. It will never happen under Rene leadership.

We have now an Illegal, unelected, nominated President, to make matter worst he was born in Uganda.

We also have an unelected, looser Opposition leader in charge of the Oppositon.

Don't trust everything you see, even salt looks like sugar

Put all of them on minimum wage and watch how fast thing will change!

Have a wonderful day we shall see what next!

Yes, I noticed that. Wavel Ramkalawan called Danny Faure a transitional president, and demanded new elections or else.
It was a threat of sorts. Faure was elected on a ticket. He can call elections any time. It's his prerogative.
However,Ramkalawan lost the election and was nominated. He became leader of opposition by some sort of pas baton himself.
I support LDS but I do not support Ramkalawan. I too am sick of listening to his garbage and half baked political statements of duplicity and confusion over serious matters.
I much prefer to listen to all the others in the line up. They make sense. But most of all they are genuine and speak from the heart.
Just compare him to Flory Larue or Ahmed Afif. It's a different category completely. He takes things on a personal level and it is sickening. Hon. Afif cornered Adam with numbers. Hon. Larue cornered Faure with a challenge to remove Zomn Lib before we move on. No reply.
That says more then asking PL if they are sincere because of People Plus. Who cares about people plus. No one reads it.
CGill

Anonymous said...

Addendum-

Would it not be nice if Ramkalawan would have said:" Mr. Faure, Hon. Larue has called for removal of Zomn Lib from town as a symbol jesture of the new Seychelles under your administration, a symbol of the end of victimization, as you eloquently announced in your inauguration speech. We call on you to pronounce yourself, in the spirit of national reconciliation, as you so announced. I appeal to Speaker, that we adjourn, until we get a reply from the President. Once we receive the reply, we will be in a better position, to address the appointments before us".

Missed opportunity and perhaps a historical blunder.

Meriton Vice President ........seems Faure is not changing but sticking to the past ..Meriton in the last 4 decades has occupied the same ministry namely Sport ....not a minsitry with the burden of taking crucial, important decision ---since he has been soely minister for sport and nothing else ....i consdier him unqualified for this post ........Of course it was expected tha5t he would be next vice ..because that whats Pl polite buro decided long ago ..but it also shows that Faure .though his speech for radical change is sticking to the past....with old order members who many have proven themsleves as incompetent.....like decades long minsiter of Sport Dr Meriton.....

It is a recycle of the same ,,,which make us question Faure words during the inauguration--------

And by the way .What is Meriton qualification ...?he is qualified in What?

As to Mr Larose ..i guess he is the most qualifed economist to be found in Seychelles to date ..lots of experience and i hope he would use his expeirence to get seychelles back on track again after ex-finance minsiter Dr Faure and Prof in economy namely Prof Michel bankrupted us ,and created and astronomic dfebt on our people.

LaRose can get the money by raising up taxes any where possible.
Like property tax and hotel tax thats just a couple.
So watch where you put your money he is coming after it.
Again after he raised up.....PL will come and steal as usual!
If LaRose cant fix the corruption he will be corrupted.

Talk sense.
If you tax property, it means you must be encouraged to develop it. If you tax hotels a cent more, you kill it. La Rose is a serious person. He is no fool. He is a professional. He can serve in any administration, be it Le a Pep or LDS.
He is like Afif.
Now the real question is can he keep his cool under fire from both sides, since both PL and LDS have a big appetite for taxes and mis spending.
When the 361,000,000 supplement came around, I did not hear LOTO complain about his allocation of SCR. 1.5 million for a LOTO.

In Seychelles we create more than enough wealth for all 100,000 Seselwa souls to benefit. Mr Larose has to plug all the loopholes to ensure the wealth created are fairly distributed. He has to work hard at ending corruption corruption. He has to work hard to tax fairly. No more unnecessary concessions. We need a level playing field for all businesses, especially the Hotel & Tourism industry. Eden Island was heavily subsidised and are now competing with Seselwa Ordinair who has to pay heavy interests to service their loans. Yachts competing with Seselwa ordinar and not paying any taxes. These foreign yachts owners hardly want to employ qualified seselwa skippers.....Can all these be looked into. And finally, what a scam is this Pension Fund building at Grand Anse Praslin. We pay into our pension for us to have security in our old age. We do not pay into a pension for them to compete directly against us in the tourism industry ! Food for thought.

Mr Gill, We should all be realistic and expect to see changes, However, I hope the unanimous appointment on Mr Larose will not disappoint. We cannot expect Mr Larose to wave the magic wand and 'oh lal la all is sorted' Mr Gill has indicated that the government and ex-finance ministers are aware of the 2 track system that existed for seselwa ordinary and the rest who were sucking up to PL. I hope Mr Larose will not have to start right from the bottom up. Such a start will waste another valuable 6 months. I would suggest we get Mr Gill & Mr Afif to meet with a sensible group from the Hotel/Tourism Industry to brainstorm a way forward. I am sorry the current state of the SCCI does not inspire confidence - hence my suggestion of serious stakeholders who have Seselwa Ordinair interest at heart. Hope this suggestion is taken in the right spirit to move things along at a reasonable pace. We have waited 40years ! All the talking has been done. Now roll up our sleeves, get out there and let us start making this change that DRF has promised. We should not have to wait another 4 years to start seeing progress ! If we have to wait another 4 years DRF will not last 4 months ! Ball squarely in your court President DRF !

Could not add to your points. I personally will give my time and knowledge of the trade, to help fix this mess.
Anytime.
At the end of the day, it is impacting on our bottom line.
I note Minister Adam promised us a copy of the World Bank Report due in May on Vertical Integrstion of the Tourism Industry and secondly, he recruited two lawyers to draft anti. Monopoly legislation to protect SME s .
We have not heard anything until now and he has now moved on to Ministry of Heslth, instead of Vice President.
A good move for the healthy.
If we have to wait for treat meant like we waited for JP Adam and the monopoly issue, those sick, WILL die.
Frankly, never have I met someone who had so many excuses for things, and he had a canning ability, to drag out these excuses not for weeks, but years.
Be that as it may, the ball rest squarely in DRF court.

However, if we see progress, we can then give President DRF & Dr Larose the benefit of our doubts. Interesting times ahead !
