Seychelles Democracy on Steroids

What a week in the National Assembly. Oh, what a week for a Nation coming to grips with it's neglected past, and coming to grips with the reality, that Le Pep, the neo communists of the region, are no longer in full and absolute control. What a week, the Public could not keep up. People carried small portable radios in the market, and stuck it to their ears as a list of Ministers, Vice President, Designated Minister was tossed about.

Vice President
The Vice President Nomination went to Vincent Meriton, after all. Speculation was rife that Jean Paul Adam would be nominated. Then Patrick Herminie was rumored ( " Once a Speaker....always a Speaker" [ ok, whatever].
President Faure with mandate no matter what anyone says chose Meriton as his vice to keep the peace in his fledging party. The LDS was gracious enough to pass him, in spite of telling us that his Party is supreme, and his president James Michel is supreme, over the President of the Republic. LDS did not ask Meriton is Le Pep has a party to party protocol with the Communist Party of People's Republic of China, it does, so that makes it a fellow Communist party until Danny Faure lives up to his promise to change course. .Naturally, his other appointees who did not make it, are Communists, Faure may not have noticed, after a challenging cocktail and ambassadorial schedule, not to mention a meeting with the aloof Seychelles Chamber of Commerce, which Praslin Business has described as now rouge.

Macsuzy Scrapes By

LDS passed Macsuzy Mondon, in spite of the huge failure in education under her watch as a designated Minister. Minister Mondon also advise us that she believes in the principle of " collective responsibility". This is a pure communist principle. In the world, we are born into, we come in one by one. Register our births one by one. We do not register births or deaths collectively. Perhaps Le Pep has something else in mind. This matter of collective responsibility is rooted in the one party state when Rene imposed the idea on his ministers, after Gerard Hoarau was gunned down in London. If you touch the ministerial salary, then you are collectively responsible, communism at its best. The sad thing about Le Pep, is they do not even realize they are communists.

Dr. Patrick Herminie Blocked!
The speaker Dr. Patrick Herminie was blocked by LDS for a ministerial nomination. The banter on this nomination came from Ramkalawan himself, alleging Herminie did all sorts of nasty things in the campaign at English River. Perhaps he did. I will not say no. But if Herminie was a Tamil Hindi, Ramkalawan would certainly have supported his nomination, treated him with kindness like God Ramchandra would. But he is not Tamil, so Ramkalawan drew a little blood on his career and dreams.
We need doctors at the hospital anyways. While on the subject, can all nurses in politics please get back to nursing as well, with exception of Clive Roucou, who has been fired as a nurse, duly elected as a MNA.
The process of nomination for Dr. Herminie showed us the dark side of Ramkalawan: " Revenge". Strange coming from a priest who has vowed to walk in Jesus foot steps, strange. Maybe it was just words, to fool a pay check, get access, you never know these things, only the person knows.

Potter Bored Me To Death
I listen carefully to Marie Lise Potter. I listen, waited for the thunder, to show she is solid and Ministerial material. It never came. Hon. Afif ask her:" what is the most pressing economic issue facing Seychelles?" Her answer was social welfare-" wealth redistribution". Most of he wealth in Seychelles under Michel has been Foreign direct investment or FDI. Are we going to " redistribute that" ? If so, it means we will have to steal it, then give it to the 40% living below the poverty line, which she questioned. For the amount of time she spent in New York, her focus must have been on shopping, sight seeing. Her presentation showed very little by way of knowledge of what makes a country run well: " the ECONOMY". All and all, on this vote, LDS did the Faure Administration a big favor. They should not take it too badly.

Ambassador Dick Esparon

I was shocked LDS dumped Ambassador Dick Esparon. I am not sure why they did that. Perhaps he was over confident, and being away from the micro phone and the opposition for so long, he mis handle his nomination. He was a little brash. But that did not represent his abilities. His contacts for FDI are indispensable for poor Seychelles who has been buried in external and domestic debt which now approaches $ 1 Billion in all, according to the last FITCH Ratings. For the good of the Nation, Mr. Faure should find a post for Ambassador Esparon, wherein his talents, abilities, experience can be put to use for the Nation.

After all, we are all Seychellois, NOT just Ramkalawan ( he said he is Tamil en route through Mauritius, maybe if Esparon said that, he would be confirmed, tough being a creole these days).

Sesel  Pou Seselwa!

May God Bless All Freedom Loving Seychellois!

Interesting. The country is balancing the change.
There will be mistakes, but the key is to move forward, stay committed .
Well written.

Agree, before that it was a one sided Assembly-Lot of people will oppose my view..anyway! Just like Mancham ....as usual talking trash before putting his mouth and brain into gear....He stated in his letter about WE are not taking the road to MONACO...however in 1976...HE wanted to make Seychelles the next SWISS....and WE still remember what happen.....YES!.....his Prime Minister le poulayie overthrew him...Poulayie quikly took us the road to SWAZILAND....Mancham then tried several year to come back by hiring Mercenaries...Do we still remember that?.... Mancham you should know that ROME was not build in one day!...Ohh forgot he had a stroke!

LDS is just weeks in the ASSEMBLY....LDS have until 2020 to clear up the mess that SPUP/SPPF/PL have done to our beloved country....at this time we don't care if THE PRIEST, AFFIF ANDRE FERARIE, or whoever...if they don't perform WE THE PEOPLE SHALL VOTE THEM OUT...is that not simple?

Ram used his power to take out some revenge. He loathed ever moment. He was consumed in power like a true bull dog.
At one point he threaten Le Pep:" don make me block all your candidates". Classic Rene style. You have to cuddle him to death or else he will bite your butt off.
Le Pep better bring some doggie biskets to the cocktails if it wants to make progress,

Jimbo this is the road to democracy a-la-LDS style.

PL had almost 40 years their way or the highway.

So what is wrong?

Expect lot of friction along the way.

LDS reminded us before the election that they expect hard work and at time will be brutal.

There will be mistakes, I agree with this comment, because there has always been mistakes. Seychelles out lived those mistakes. The country moved on. Both sides will make mistakes. Both sides will become accountable to the People. This is why it is in the interest of both sides to get it right. Claiming having no power for 40 years hence a right of abuse is not a margin of error that is permissible. We expect reasonableness given the circumstance. We expect Seselwa interest to be defended, promoted, enhanced at each step. We expect: Truth, Accountability, Transparency in words, but above all: DEEDS. This will unite Seychelles over time, our Nation, and people, are bigger then the sum of all politicians. Lest they not forget this, lest they serve with humility for the betterment of the Nation. There is no room for revenge for personal vendettas.
Call a crime a crime, call an abuse and abuse. But never use revenge as a tool to settle childish scores.

What two words that Seselwa are facing with today?
Unity and Corruption. We all agree on that.
Pl version of the above word will be different from LDS.
In the past less then 50% of Opposition except their version even they did not like it.
After 40 years Oppositions said enough is enough and they voted PL out to change course of the ship call Seychelles once a Paradise. So my question is what is so wrong with this? PL needs to except reality.
They should give themselve a pat-on-the back and said OK we had a good 40 years ride and let them do their way!
Sorry to offend other people who don't like my opinion!

Faure has to hang his own people to survive.
If LDS is smart, it will play that card carefully.
If not it will be a slow drag down process .

Anonymous said...

Mr Gill you dont agree if they vote a Minister out and you also dont agree if they vote them in??Did I missed somthing here??
Yes this is not an easy task and it will take time. You should not focus one one person but think of seselwa....we had enough of abuse for 40 yrs
I always say if the LDS are not doing a good job then we will vote them out..this is DEMOCRACY

5:23 you need to clear the assertion. I am lost.

It's the REASON that is flawed in the Herminie case.
Dick Esparon as well. The LDS was offended by him.
Potter no one will lose sleep over.
If you do not give an administration a government, what do you expect them to do?
Here are some options-

1. Appoint Secretaries, LDS complains.
2. Appoint Special Advisos , LDS complains.

Is this serious?

An eye for an eye leave the world blind. Two wrongs do not make a right.
The country must continue to function, in spite of this political baby splitting.
LE Pep will be judged by how they handle this situation so will LDS.
So far there is lack of maturity on both sides.
People lose when this happens. Business loses, we all lose.

Mitsy ...a donkey
Meriton a maosist with little to offer.
Its literally a recycle ...seems after 4 decades of the same faces as ministers .....Pl failed to create new blood.....that it now lack of brains that it must recycle the same over and over again.

Due to the fact ,that Pl minsiters were choosen to be minsiter for ---literally for life .........No new blood were preapred and given the change to --be minsiter etc -----leaving Pl with a deficit of new blood....new faces ,,,new ideas.....--that Faure must the same recycling gang members ............And Faure todl us --his cabinets are made upü of experienced persons -----it is true Persons like Larose is a highly proffessional with experience --.......But can we Say the same for Mitsy .Mcsuzy ------they seem experience in Failures......

Macsuzy -failed education
Mitsy failed health
Meriton .was minisiter for the less demanind minsiter namely sport... for life....never proven himself in anything --there he is -...As vide Preisdent --a postion long decided by Pl poltie buro ------Nothing that he was supposed --after Faure to be Appointed Preisdent ----a dream that would never be accomlpsihed By Meriton ------TIMe has change----

Maybe they are about to bring back the legendary FAR and Maxime Ferarie, that the only left breathing!

He is heading straight to Bamako and hope he don't turn to NAPA LAND as his Konper did.

Wish him the best pov dyab.....If you are not blind just have a look at the PL representatives in the Assembly.

Do they look Kosto and Kapab? However to tell you truth they just happen to look very SERIOUS in their REDS!

Pl is left with a majority of veterans, which gave Faure no choice of presenting a new generation of politicians. The reshuffle was in fact a recycle. The reshuffle seem yet additional evidence that the Pl is in the throes of its own state of emergency(not only the country) as it tries to crane its neck and look vacantly at a rapidly disappearing sunset over the horizon. The reshuffles was intended to soften the blowbacks from the deep fall of Pl.Faure thought he could make Pl float like a butterfy and sting like a bee.The hands cannot hit what the eyes cannot see>the fact of the matter is that pl is down to the count. As Obama would saz@zou donot wrap an old fish in a piece of paper and called it change.its still gonna stink.

Faure appointments are slated with moving bad people around like Adam Morgan demoted.
Neither did a good job in their ministries.
Both want to be president.
Opposition should have given them Le Pep room to sack them.
Edith Alexander demoted as well. Now the youth will talk at her not the other way around. She remains a time bomb for Le a Pep. Sending her to youth and culture is a self inflicted suicide bomber mission.
From these appointments, it is clear, Faure is shooting his foot to spite his face.
It is unfortunate he could not reach a better " detente" with the opposition, which could bring about a better result for the Nation.
The only serious appointment that will save the economy possibly is St. Ange taking over ports and transport, mom binding with Tourism. Long over due. La Rose will have to navigate to create national wealth not devalue the rupee. Tall order when Le Pep is struggling to deal with -40% poverty base line members of population.

I agree .for me too,Only St Ange(have been very successful as tourism minister.in fact he has exceled all other ministers) and Larose have my approval(he is a professional and teemed with experience and hope we would be able to clean up the maasive debt Michel created).....Maybe ,I would have sent back JENPA to the foreign ministry(simply because he mastered English and French) ,the rest we can throw them into the trash bin.
On poverty ,I heard pl talking about SPREADING THE WEALTH AROUND(Handouts/ dependency on state)..........I guess LAROSE deep inside is saying ,,,,,"let us rather CREATE OPPORTUNITY and boost JOBS creation for Seychellois" ,in order to create more wealth.Dr larose would also Tells Faure that we need to reduce this astronomic foreign debt Pl has created ...for though we will promote Investment today, will do little good if our massive debt is choking investment of tomorrow.

The rule is this- " the more hand outs, the more demand for hard currency. If the money is not used wisely, eventually it leads to DEVALUATION.
This is the rule.

I heard JENPA saying to reduce the astronomic poverty figure ..Progressive Tax is the answer///////In other words take money from those generating wealth and give it to the poor///*its a way to reduce relative poverty not acute poverty ..and alone it would not have a big effect. CONCERN> .Taxes and benefits clearly compensate for the failure labour markets to provide sufficient origin income for all citizens.However.the risks are it could disincentive work, create moral hazard.
i would think Larose would agree with me ......the solutions to reduce poverty needs a colection of actions such as....
1.SUSTAINABLE ECONOMIC GROWTH
2.reducing unemployment
3.GOOD salary..
In other words tries to achieve both Vertical and horizontal equity. For that ,we need,,,Policies that are 1)based on best available evidence on which factors limit economic success among the poor, and which policies are more effective in mitigating those factors. The factors that limits success among the poor is EDUCATION level and WEAKED SKILLS.For instance ,those zoungsters who fialed to make it to high education such as going to Polytechnis ,Hotel school,University ,etc....*are in there majority and literallz without baisc skills in anythings/////That is whz i beleive for these majority of youths which each year come to increase the number of unemployed) need to be privded with opportunity by the State....and the best waz to do that is not by disincentive others but create a real DUAL VOCATIONAL EDUCATION SZSTEM for these youths whereby they can be trained and skilled into a job by having THEORICAL course in classrooms while going for the PRATICAL courses at a *what i would call a GODFATHER enterprise both Public or private to get the practical training* ...Advantage ..participants get both the theorical and prartical training at the same time which allow them to start a job just after their courses ...thus ready for job market...this is one solution among others.

Pl a du pain sur la Planche.

Anonymous said...

Added to the above comment//sustainable growth can only help dealing with poverty unless it is INCLUSIVE.In other words ....promote inclusive and sustainable Human development and works to reduce poverty in all its dimensions.

If people are poor, why does government advocate first time employment at 21 or 22 years old?
When my family was poor, I took to waiting tables at 14 after school to earn money to buy books, clothes, other personal belongs.
I delivered 110 papers daily from 5:00 am -6:00 am to earn an extra $40.00 a month.
Government needs to accept, it's own fault in this affair. It has baby people from cradle to grave with leftist policies.
Every day I see kids playing football, volleyball, without a care in the world. In the States, kids in that situation would be hassling for jobs , 2 hours a day, 4 hours, 6 hours a day.
It adds up.

Pl lacks ideas, innovative thinking.......You are totally right....Dito to the USA,In Europe Students take PART TIME JOBS so that the can generate Pocket Money,it is alos a fantastic way to gain discover the real working world .gain skills and experience for the future .For Instance ,in France,.the law allow students to work 964 hours in a given year.which correspond to 60 percent of full-time employment for a year.

Faure first few weeks as President seems to be STAY ON COurse ..continues his predecessors policies .......First mis-step..Dr Faure put His party friends as Pirncipal secretary ..positions reserved for public.....While Seychellois continues to ask that D?aros and St Joseph islands be turned into Nat Reserves(the peoples wish)Pl and Glenny play deaf ears and act above the law ,,,and contniue to sell ,resell ,do what they want..confirming Meritons words"Party is supreme"Maybe it si time to ask Glenny where does IDC goes?

This week ,I read that pl is planning to develop ACQUACULTURE -------a godo thing to boost revenue for the country ..However ,I donot understand hwy Pl still fail to deal with the tons of bycatch fishes discard into the Ocean by TUNA SEINERS on a daily basis ..that if collected ,an use to produce of products like Animal feeds etc ..could generate multi millions o of dollars to our economy --It seems Pl ministers etc ..donot know where to start or complete ignorance about ways to get this done and how these bycatch could be used --WELL, PL since you have diploamtic relation/ties with NORWAY ..ask the later for advice on how to deal with this wastage......... for Norway has implement law and set up management process in palce since 1987 and with sucesss ...By doing so ,Seychelels would generate multi millions of doallrs than ,maybe Pl could pay back our astronomic debt ,and stop its addiction of foreign debt which is destroying our nation....

PL has been a failure at fisheries.
Aqua culture dreams is another fiasco.
Remember prawn farm?
Remember Dolor telling us there is a big market for cordonier in Asia and we can farm it?
These are all socialist pipe dreams rooted in lack of practical experience.
I suggest the Public just ignore PL when they speak about Blue Economy, Aqua Culture, fisheries.
Ignore them ......for they do not know what they say!

to Dr Faure comment, whereby he is asking the Assembly to ractify an Inrtewrnational Covnetion which will make seychelles an attractive spot for massive immigration invasion as we seeing in Euroep by Sysrians and othgers .......That is irresponsible ,,noting that on sucvh issues of National concenr the Assembly should have been consulted bofore any deal is made.Imagine an unrest in MAdagtascar ,,,then millions of madagascains could take boats and invade our EZZ aND LAND AS ASUYLM,IMMIGRANT, REFGEES WHAT WOULD DSITABILIZE OUE LAND ,SOCIETY AND IDENTITY .
mOREVOER,sUCH AN IMPORTANT ISSUE SHOULD NOT ONLY FACED CONCSULTATION FROMN mps BUT MIGHT EVEN NEED A refenrendum SO THAT PEOPLE OF SEYCHELLES DECiDE AND NOT A MAJORITY GOVERNEMNT WHICH DID NOT EVEN CONSULT THE aSSEMBLY PRIOR TO ANY DEALS ,AND IT SEEMS mps WERE NOT EVEN INFORMED ON THE PROCESSS..

aN intenrational comvention that make seychelles a target for potential and massive immigration is dangerous for our land and therefore should nevber be ractified regardless who the hell thinks we should ......
Euroepans would likely want us to ractified such a dangerous convention .it would release the and r4educe the invasion for europe .
