Save The Mud Turtle
The key argument Weekly cites is the need to save the yellow bellied and black mud turtles. These little fresh water creatures were introduced into Seychelles and are common around the world. If the project goes through Weekly, along with Ministry of Environment can insure that the population of these turtles actually increases, by committing the developer to increase its population, spread them around Mahe and every where the Editor lives, so he can feel comfortable with the project,slated to bring in over $1 Billion in foreign direct investment, which Seychelles needs to increase the salary base of Seychellois and increase our quality of life. Projects of this magnitude help the country, compress employers to raise salaries for serious and qualified Seychellois.
Focus On The Right Issue
What Weekly should be focusing on is getting Government of Seychelles commitment to engage the developer, make commitments to empower Seychellois in the project, ensure our truckers have work, our excavator operators get contracts, our rock blasters blast, our small contractors can bring in Indian workers to work the project, so they make a good living off the project.
At the development stage ask government to insure development impact contributions are made to up grade roads, airport, bus services. Insure housing for staff are contracted out across the economic base to insure Seychellois have an interest in the project succeeding. A 320 room hotel will require near 1000 staff housing, numerous buses for transfers, a host of other services which our people can participate in a meaningful manner. We are no longer any ones " BOY" so when a serious project comes along, let's welcome it with a different eye, a eye that will insure Seychellois benefit, not get cast aside and we are left with nothing but a granite rock to sit on and cry over why we are in such a mess, then drink ourselves in self pity when Mauritians lock the deals, we are left to fight over crumbs and start referring back to June 5 th, 1977 when we have nothing else to say, when we know too well the culprits of the mis deeds today are more Catholic then the Pope.

We Seselwa do not have the capacity to look after existing hotels of less than 50 rooms, so how the hell are Seselwa going to benefit from a 320 room hotel that will disfigure Mahe forever. There are small Seselwa establishments of 10 rooms employing foreign labour as chambermaid, gardener and other menial jobs. Forget it when it gets to jobs requiring qualifications, we just do not have enough man/womanpower. Why should we be chasing tourism numbers when we have existing capacity ? Our current arrivals are enough to benefit Seselwa if it is well managed and controlled rather than let the big hotels siphon their receipts abroad without contributing their fair share. If we conduct a serious exercise you will conclude that it is the small guesthouses are paying more taxes than the large establishments. I say NO to destroying Police Bay. I say no to any other large developments that will not directly benefit Seselwa.

First the issue of Grand Police.
It was the location of an infamous prison that held over 150 prisoners. It had a on going farm with hundreds of pigs belonging to Pti Nal Marengo, cared for by the prisoners and army soldiers. There is nothing pristine to protect if we are intellectually honest.
What should be done is LDS- Le Pep round table in committee and see what conditions can be placed on the developer who appears to be Khalifa, to preserve environment access for Seychellois what needs to be access. Khalifa is no our enemy. He is a staunch western ally and he has helped Seychelles tremendously, when Michel bankrupted Seychelles.
Occupancy rates are 66% nationally. Load factor slightly lower. This means additional rooms does not help occupancy. But additional rooms will help load factor. You cannot run planes at a lost below 70% load factor and expect all these flights to continue. Sooner. Later, they will drop off like flies if we do not increase load factor . To increase load factor you need breed hotels, with branded marketing, small hotels indeed benefit from the exposure as an incidental up side. We do not compete with 5 or 6 star products.
Labour is a big issue. But we ha seen serious Seychellois doing very well with FDI projects. Increase salary base, increase opportunists. If we want to increase the standard of living, we need more projects.
What needs to be done, is NEGOTIATE a better deal for Seychellois.

Gill makes solid sense. We lost this battle under Michel. Now we should all be focused on getting the best deal for Seychelles. Better hospitals, better buses, better roads, better water catchment, better standard of living, better improved flight frequency. When this is accomplished which I believe is possible - the next issue must be lowering taxes for small business and increasing taxes of larger hotels . It is common roger hotels around the world pay 16% vat on rooms and upwards to 22%. Smaller establish ts should beropped to 10% flat but enforce start compliance. Taxis need to pay their fair share. Pirates need to be made to pay penalty. Losing a battle does not mean you are dead. It means you need to win the next one and win the war . The war I believe is securing the deal not kicking everyone out of Seychelles based on racism.
