U.S. Statement at the Universal Periodic Review of Seychelles

The United States welcomes the Government of Seychelles to the UPR Working Group.
We note the recent presidential election, which led to an historic runoff, and welcomed the participation of both international and local election observers.  Nevertheless, we are concerned by reports that some opposition candidates were not able to exercise their rights to freedom of expression and association in the lead-up to the election.
We commend the Constitutional Court’s decision to strike down the Public Order Act as unconstitutional, thereby better protecting and promoting the right to freedom of peaceful assembly.
We remain concerned about the ongoing problem of domestic violence despite laws that specify that rape, spousal rape, and domestic abuse are criminal offenses punishable by a maximum of 20 years’ imprisonment.
We recommend that the Government of Seychelles:
1. Fully investigate alleged election irregularities and ensure proper due process is followed in all court challenges.
2. Take measures to ensure that existing laws criminalizing rape and domestic violence are fully enforced, and cases are fully investigated and prosecuted consistent with these laws.
3.  Enforce Seychelles’ international human rights obligations and constitutional guarantees regarding the rights to freedom of religion, association and expression.

(end statement)

US comments sting pl right in the heart.Of course pl mmouthpiecce NATION ddoesnot ppublish such news.Pl is rather telling us it has gain a few points on its human rights record, which in reality is not a great improvement. While beating people may have reduced,, POVERTY has skyrocketed.Poverty pl,is,an,assault on human dignity, but also reflects a voilation of human rights when it is the direct consequences of a government policy, or,it is caused by the failure to act.
Depriving Seychellois to the right to work ,or depriving seychellois to create their own company,as a direct consequence of government to favored monopoly,.....hence depriving a person in its, inclusion of SOCIAL RIGHT.......is,a human rights abuse,pl.
Depriving seychellois to benefit from their economy by having a government giving away its country economy to foreigners,or deprive seychellois jobcin favorcof expats, gops,is achuman right abuse of a citizen.......we can go on and on pl......
So need to celebrate for having gain two points on ur human right record....

The key point, is that the Presidential Elections have not been recognized as Free,Fair, Credible.
This is an alarm bell for a Mr. Michel - and company.
As this lack of credibility persists, they themselves will be calling for a 3 rd Round in three months.
The situation is dire, given that USA works hand in hand with India, over policy and posture in the Indian Ocean.
Consequently, EU and international organizations follow suit,
So what has been written, is not a simple short paper as some careless readers differ to.
What has been written is to be conservative : " a loaded gun" .
Mr. Michel became President nicely.
He should be preparing his exit.........." Nicely".
No need to embarrass Seychelles.

Do the Right Thing!
Sesel Pou Seselwa!
